As we close out the summer season we may feel remorse for the lost days of sitting on the beach or barbecue with friends, but we don't have long to be sad because another season has just started. Yes, we are officially in the mix of the football season and that also brings on another favorite past time, the ability to tailgate. I like to think of tailgating as an extension of all things that are good about summer - the food, outdoors, good times with good friends - the difference being that it's a little colder and everyone is wearing coordinating colors.
If the opening weekend of college football is any indication for the season to come, it is going to be an interesting one and that will give fans a lot to celebrate. Whether your team is pro or collegiate, the tailgating set up is similar and there are a few things that you need: food, drink, team spirit. Hopefully you can have some sort of shelter as well, whether that be a pop-up tent or an old mobile home. You will find that the crazier you get, the more creative you are with your tailgating, the more fun you will have and the more attention you will get. That is the beauty of the tailgate experience: you can be off the wall and no one will care (as long as you are wearing the right colors).
One thing I have noticed is that some people go a little overboard on the alcohol before the game. This is not such a good idea, especially if you are going to a college game. Think of the example you are setting and just because they don't sell alcohol in the stadium, doesn't mean you have to overdo it in the parking lot. As with all parties, moderation will make a better time for everyone.
Have fun this football season! Here are some more tailgating tips...
